Pro RWD racer Stephan Papadakis lost control of his AEM/Driver FX Honda Civic Sunday during a test pass at the National Time Trials at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz., Sunday.

Papadakis, who clocked a run of 6.68 seconds at 211 mph during testing on Friday at F.I.R., was in the left lane Sunday afternoon when his bright red Honda shook hard around 300 feet. Papadakis pedaled the car, which then went right. After he lifted and corrected, the car hit the left retaining wall, before sliding across the track and making contact with the right wall.

"I encountered some serious tire shake that caused the car to get loose and I brushed the wall after pulling the chutes to straighten it out," he said. "Luckily, the damage to the frame and engine is superficial. It looks much worse than it really is. The body took the abuse and we've already gotten to work on the new body and will be at the opener in Fontana on March 13."

Papadakis reports that he is a little sore. "It feels like I slept funny," said Papadakis, who has leading-edge safety equipment including a full fire system, SFI padded roll cage, driveshaft containment housing, and custom-molded race seat. Papadakis also wears a full helmet, HANS device and a NOMEX fire-resistant racesuit per NHRA specifications.

Papadakis has no timeframe for his return to NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing series competition. The immediate plan is to return to his Los Angeles-area shop to examine the car and keep the usable parts. After that, the car will head to chassis builder Don Ness' shop in Minnesota.

"I can get a new body quickly, the fabrication will take us some time," Papadakis said. "If crashing is part of racing, then we're definitely racing. We were fighting this track just like everybody else this weekend."
